Maths at St. Mary's

At St. Mary’s, we support children to explore life in all its fullness through teaching mathematics using the mastery approach, so that our children are equipped with the mathematical skills and knowledge required to help them thrive as 21st century adults. All children are encouraged to develop a sense of curiosity about the subject by learning through small steps, building resilience, and securing and deepening understanding of concepts. Our pupils flourish through enjoyable learning experiences and confidently apply skills to real life contexts and problem solving.

To facilitate this approach, the school uses a scheme known as White Rose Maths. By using the White Rose Maths frameworks, we can help all children achieve excellence in mathematics. No pupils are allowed to feel like they ‘can’t do maths’. Instead, a positive ‘can-do’ attitude is encouraged and children are taught to enjoy working with numbers. Adopting a White Rose Maths approach is about building a deep understanding of topics, helping children become confident mathematicians who embrace mathematical challenges with a smile.

Maths National Curriculum Guidance

This is the document that all of the children’s maths learning is based upon. Any learning that children do is based upon this.

White Rose Maths Curriculum Progression

St Mary’s uses a scheme called White Rose Maths to support its implementation of the National Curriculum. Teachers use elements of this scheme and adapt it to the learning needs of their classes.

Above are the two main policies that teachers use to inform their planning and delivery of maths content to the children.

Times Tables & Multiplication Check

At St. Mary’s, the children learn their times tables facts, focusing on rapid recall of those facts. As well as learning within and across lessons, children undertake times tables booklets throughout the term. Additionally, activities include rapid recall quizzes.

Children usually learn their tables in this way:

  • Y3: 10x, 2x , 5x, 4x
  • Y4: 3x, 6x, 7x, 8x, 9x

Downloadable Workbooks

These are additional workbooks that parents can download and print off. They cover each key area of maths learning and are broken down into year groups. Each workbook comes with answers at the back of each document. Please see your child’s class teacher should you wish to know what your child is currently learning about.
