Spelling and Phonics
EDSHED - SPELLING SHED
At St Mary's we use Spelling Shed to support our teaching of spelling from year 3 to year 6.

No Nonsense Phonics intervention
We use the No Nonsense Phonics Skills programme to aid teachers in offering targeted support to children who are still mastering their decoding skills and phonics knowledge. The No Nonsense Phonics programme received its validation from the DfE in July 2021 as an independent full SSP programme. It offers a clear, step-by-step method for teaching reading, handwriting, and spelling.
The programme:
- Provides systematic phonics teaching and pupil practice from code to text level with a rich vocabulary.
- Teaches handwriting of upper and lower case letters in connection with the Alphabet and the Alphabetic Code.
- Applies phonics to reading and writing cumulative texts, enhancing comprehension and creativity.
- Establishes knowledge of ‘spelling word banks’ from the beginning.
- Engages learners routinely in formative assessment.
- Involves parents and carers to support learning at home.
